EP109 - So What’s Been Happening? - Humble (Stephen Holmes)
Out of the disparate urges of youth and middle age, the Kiama NSW trio formed in March 2022. The result is primitive, literate yet defiant, lyrically abstract yet nostalgic, musically searching, “slouching without, frantic within.” Dad rock, if your Dad is Rob Zombie.
Humble combines the crashing classic rock drums of Ryan King (DE/4D, The Talkers, Dirty Headbangers), the confident and propulsive groove of bassist Darcy Wall (Kaleidoscope, Jayhawks) and the jangling, heartbreaker guitars and direct vocals of Stephen Holmes (DE/4D, Human Auto, Floating Axe Studio). The latter's voice channeling everyone from Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock to Stephen Malkmus and Pere Ubu's David Thomas.
The impressively diverse There's Still Time, released late in 2022, included three singles: ‘Sure Thing’ seethes with lusty, cosmic frustration, filtered through jerky post-punk and primitive rock 'n' roll dynamics. Second single ‘That Don’t Work’ threads the Smiths and the Byrds together with the indie hooks of NZ band Garageland and Madchester jangle folk, while on the album's third single, 'Wasted On Purpose', the song emerges from a dissonant sonic fog, an insistent kick drum driving the song onwards over a post-punk bass melody and Holmes' infectious Malkmus-esque vocal hooks. "An intriguing collection of refined chaos that is as utterly compelling as it is fun. Ranging from the raw delicacy of
The Go-Betweens to the swagger of the New York Dolls, the troubadour musings of Jonathan Richmond to the clattering post punk sounds of The Fall, the genetic influences are many and varied but the delivery is swaggering and assured. 8.3/10 - Backseat Mafia

EP104 - So What's Been Happening? - Arabella and the Heist

Loud, raw and gritty, Arabella and The Heist punch you in the face and then kiss you on the cheek to make it all better. Hot off the Melbourne rock scene, the four piece are a Melbourne-bred hard rock outfit that ooze rock and roll of the Queens of The Stone Age kind. The kind that makes you put on your favourite leather jacket and start smoking again. Stir this up in a boiling pot of Melbourne punk tradition a la Amyl and The Sniffers and you have the rawness and grit to accompany it. Just like a well rounded meal with your favourite hot sauce, Arabella and The Heist hits you hard but has enough sweetness to leave you coming back for more. Arabella and The Heist are a four-piece rock group fronted by the tenacious force of front-woman Holly Arabella. Joe Humphries provides the high fuzzed, often out-of-control guitar whilst Alex Brown (bass) and Ryan Jones (drums) ensure it all stays on track.

EP99 - So What's Been Happening? - Matt Ward

Adelaide alt-country singer/songwriter Matt Ward recently released his third single of the year, a heartfelt tribute to his family's favourite Australian rules team – Norwood Football Club. Matt draws on the rich history of uniquely Australian songwriting that successfully took elements of alt-country and folk music, bathed them in the landscape, big skies and red desert highways of this sunburnt country and created a sound that was poetic and highly evocative, countrified melodic rock. Think Paul Kelly, The Triffids and The Go-Betweens. Off the back of his 2019 debut #1 ARIA success with Heartland (with acclaimed producer Matt Fell), Ward's Texas-recorded album If I Was In Dallas Tonight (2021) strengthened his songwriting reputation, with Rhythms magazine calling it “world class”. Ward has backed up his superb releases, which included recordings with Kate Brianna and US outlaw country artist Bonnie Montgomery, with heavyweight performances as a headline artist at the 2021 Groundwater Music Festival, a showcase artist at Nashville's Bluebird Café (Americanafest 2019) and Australian Music Week, and gigs at high profile national venues such as The Barn Wombat Flat (2021). As well as being label boss for Heartland Music Australia (Amber Rae Slade, Nathan Seeckts, Harvey Russell), Ward is currently recording music with both The Rising Sons in Adelaide and a studio album with Matt Fell in Tasmania, with plans to release a new full-length album in 2024.
